How to get a nearly $1000 raise this year
Posted by: | CommentsWe all know that exercising, eating right, and keeping long term stress and pain at low levels is good but did you know that you can get a raise if you start doing this regularly?
Well according to researcher at East Carolina University found that people leading a regularly sedentary lifestyle generate around $964 in increased medical cost. That translates to $434 million in direct cost to the state.
From the analysis just doing around 30 minutes of moderate exercise (walking for example) each weekday will save you on the low end nearly $1000. On the high end an incalculable benefit to people in a high risk category such as a family history of diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.
The take away is that if you would like a raise financially, including such activities as walking, biking, large muscle rhythmic exercise yield great dividend to the individual as well as the state.

Massage Is Not Just For Women Anymore

Recently a gentleman came into our office seeking help with some leg and back pain that he was having while training for the Marine Corps Marathon. Another client, a top-rated male amateur bike rider, visits the office once or twice a week without fail. Since adding massage to his regimen, his frequency of wins has increased. Normally such requests would not strike me as odd, and treating such problems is a common practice. However, what has caught my attention is the increasing number of men who are seeking massages. Whereas in the past a massage was stereotypically a feminine activity, seeking relaxation and a bit of luxury at a spa, today it is more and more frequently men who are turning to massage clinics as a viable way to improve their sports performance.
Men are recognizing more and more that massage helps both with preparing for and recovering from athletic events. It serves as a safe and effective way to help athletes perform better and recover faster so that they can get back in the game with little interruption. The Marine Corps Marathon runner comes in on the day before his races for 30 minutes of a fast passed massage that leaves the therapists feeling like they themselves were in an athletic event. The runner’s treatment focuses on the parts of the body most used in running, and the therapist treats a few other parts of the body for good measure. Included in this massage are stretches to the muscles that will be most active, such as the quads, gluts and hamstring group. A few days after each event he comes in again for a 60-minute recovery massage that is slow and gentle and helps his body heal itself and get ready for the coming weeks of training. There is no stretching in this recovery massage and it is similar to a regular relaxation massage. Together these two massages have given this weekend athlete the edge to beat the competition.
Another appealing aspect to the male athlete is injury recovery. One of the most frustrating effects of injury is spending months training and then, due to an injury, being unable to continue training. Along with appropriate recovery models, massage can significantly decrease the healing time by enhancing circulation to the affected part of the body and helping break down any scar tissue that may impede proper healing.
With all of the benefits of massage, many athletes will want to find an appropriate provider. It will require some homework because the typical luxury spa does not offer sports enhancement services. Look in the phone book for “massage clinic” or “athletic performance clinic.” Even after locating some clinics, it will be necessary to talk to the therapists to see what their specialties are. Just as there is a wide array of sports, there is a similarly vast array of massage specialties. Find out what the therapist knows and does, and choose a therapist that best fits your needs. A knowledgeable therapist can add value to your game and offer suggests for improvement for both in and out of the gaming arena.

Charitable Family Health Foundations – How to Start One With Little Money
Posted by: | CommentsWhen I was growing up in the hills of my birth country, television stations were very limited, and the only reliable option was public television. We could see Masterpiece Theater, Sesame Street, cartoons, The Adventures of Sherlock Homes, and occasionally an interesting documentary. I took all of these programs for granted, assuming that some magic money tree funded them. Only as an adult, understanding the way programs are made, did I realize the programs are often paid for by private and public foundations.
Basically, a foundation is an organization which identifies deficiencies in the community and tries to use its resources to rectify the problems. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is well-known, and here in our state we often hear about the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation which has made health care possible for many people who would otherwise not receive it if the programs depended solely on public funding. The United Way, another extremely beneficial organization, would hardly be able to maintain its wonderful work without such foundations. As grand as these foundations are, however, they don’t meet every need in our community.
One difficulty foundations face is in their creation. Starting a foundation requires answers to questions such as how much money will be available, how to get that money, how the money will be allocated to needy projects, and how the foundation will deal with its own tax issues. Just considering these questions will scare away many potential founders, regardless of their financial affluence. Fortunately there are foundations with the purpose of helping create foundations; they help take care of the woes that face foundations in the early stages of upstart.
Our financial planner, Linsey Mills, made us aware of one such foundation when we asked him for advice in creating a foundation to help young people learn the benefits of holistic health. His family had worked with the National Heritage Foundation (nhf.org/nhf.htm) to start their own Mills Foundation (millsfoundation.com). Using traditional means, it costs more than $20,000 to start a foundation, but working under another foundation brought down the price and helped avoid the many government pitfalls.
Working with the National Heritage Foundation, it is possible to start a family foundation for less than $200. Because the NHF has helped so many foundations, their system is streamlined so that even complicated tasks can be made simple. This means the founders can focus on the mission of the foundation rather than the hassles involved in running it. Our own experience has been wonderful, creating the foundation and providing wellness seminars, making donations to other foundations, and even providing funds (more quickly than the government and many large foundations) to people in need such as the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Small family foundations are a great way to help realize charitable contributions and leave a legacy of one’s passions and sincere concerns.
