Weight Loss without Pills: Acupuncture Therapy for Wellness
Posted by: | Comments“Mission Impossible”, a Tom Cruise blockbuster movie, grossed $45 million on its first week. “Weight Loss” as search term, generated over 50 million search engine results on Google. If it were a movie, “Weight Loss” could easily outrank “Mission Impossible” as one of blockbuster movies of all time!
However, this is not something to celebrate. This indicates an escalating worldwide problem served on a platter of French fries, cookie chips and choco bars– obesity.
Obesity and How to Avoid It
Obesity is excessive fat gained by the body due to various factors, but principally by eating too much junk. Lethargy is its favorite past time.
Obesity does not happen by chance. It is a product of your choices as to what to eat, how much and how often. It is the result of your choice to curl up in bed, a lot longer than necessary; to avoid exercise and to splurge on junk food. It does not happen overnight, but builds up with time.
Health professionals promote their usual recipe for good health: diet and exercise; however, nothing works like magic when one decides to lose weight. Since obesity is largely the result of your lifestyle choices and eating habits, weight loss should be pursued in the same way – by choice – again and again.
A lot have been written about diet pills, fruit diets and other weight loss programs, but regardless of what program you use, success is in keeping it. Losing weight should not be an on and off thing. Whatever program you choose, you should stick to it until your mirror shows you the results.
Acupuncture as a Weight Loss Therapy
Something “new” is causing a stir on the internet. It is a system of healing that originated in China, but brought to American shores by no less than former President Nixon. It is called “Chen” in Chinese, but perhaps you are familiar with its more popular name: “acupuncture”.
Yes, THE acupuncture.
No, it does not work like magic; in fact, licensed acupuncturists would advise you stick to a healthy diet and maintain your daily fitness routine for acupuncture to really work. The good thing is – it works!
Unlike other weight loss programs, acupuncture addresses not just the obesity problem, but also other toxins you harbor in your body. Imagine it as a two-edged laser sword – it cuts your cravings for more food while it treats your ailments, such as migraines, insomnia and depression. There have been claims of relief among drug dependents, too.
Needles and Stuff
I knew it! You wanted to ask about needles, right? Acupuncture DOES USE needles to stimulate 2,000 acupoints in your body. However, piercing and acupuncture are not one and the same. Acupuncture needles DO NOT wound the skin and cause bleeding.
The Tale of the Tape
When was the last time you saw your waistline at 22 inches? Of course, you age and muscles slack, but being obese has no excuse.
This major health concern affects both adults and children that no less than the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, has pushed the alert button on this creepy “silent killer”.
Try Acupuncture
Exercise, meditation and diet are surefire formula to weight loss; however, you cannot expect success overnight. The potential of missing the mark is also great, since it is never easy to curb the craving for food.
This is where acupuncture works best. It also speeds up metabolism.
Over 50% of health professionals in the United States have given this Oriental medicine a thumb up; weight watchers keep a keen eye on acupuncture as a weight loss therapy, as more and more people have claimed positive results. Don’t just believe – try it!

Wellness Center Gives FREE Blinking Reflector Light to Kids for Halloween
Posted by: | Comments
6th Sense Health and Wellness Center donates attachable blinking reflector lights to kids to help keep them safe and visible as they Trick or Treat during the Halloween celebration.
On October 31 many youngster will be out in our community dressed as witches goblins and various creatures. Costumes often visible in the daylight hours pose special danger since many colors are either dark or muted making them especially hard to see by motorists at night.
A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that during 1975-1996, the number of deaths among young pedestrians was four times higher on Halloween evening when compared with the same time period during all other evenings of the year. Halloween poses special risks to young pedestrians.
“Regardless of what your personally, feeling or beliefs, the reality is that for one night our neighborhood will be teaming with our most valuable possessions, our children and we must do whatever we can to keep them safe” states Nike Roach, President of 6th Sense Health and Wellness Center.
Mr. Roach suggest that if possible, provide alternative indoor activities to kids such as one home Trick or Treat, community center fun night or non-Halloween faith based sponsored activities. This way there will be less kids out in the dark and less likely to get hurt by motorists.
The blinking reflector is battery powered and is red in color and can be attached to a belt loop or costume for hands free operation. They can be picked up at the office of 6th Sense Health and Wellness Center on Saturday October 30 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. The reflectors will be given to each youngster accompanied by a parent or guardian

North Carolina Wellness Center Offers Free Chair Massage to Any Political Candidate
Posted by: | Comments6th Sense Health and Wellness Center offers any candidate running for public office in the state of North Carolina a complementary chair massage until Election Day.
Nike Roach, president, who served in the Armed Forces, said that “he understands that when you are out on the battlefield, people back home may not know what it’s like to be out there. It’s no different with regards to politics. Some people just see running for office as a natural extension to practicing democracy.”
John Magee, REP running for NC House District 72 indicated that though he appreciated the offer, he had to decline as “it may not be appropriate to accept a free gift while running for public office.”
According to Mr. Roach, the offer is open to any candidate regardless of political affiliations in the state of NC or others campaigning in the region until Election Day. Candidates have the option of receiving their complementary massage either at the company location or at a whistle stop in Forsyth County.
In a letter, State Senator Linda Garrou stated “Thank you for creating such an excellent wellness program in Forsyth County… I truly appreciate your effort to offer a natural alternative to relieve pain the Winston-Salem community.”
Mr. Roach, who is non-partisan, votes regularly and says that “as long as the candidates leave politics out of any confidential conversation, we will make sure they are all feeling happier when they leave our office.” So far one Republican candidate with tight shoulder muscles has taken the offer but decided that he would just pay for the visit, said Mr. Roach.

Organic Food: Is it Better Than The Alternative?
Posted by: | Comments
Today I had the pleasure of spending about an hour chatting with a nice chap from the local cancer center. Generally his job is to make sure that the patients are happy. More importantly, he also checks to make sure the people working with those patients are happy. The conversation centered on the idea that if the care giver is in good health, they serve as a good example and influence on the patients that they care for.
The conversation took a turn when he asked if organic food is better than the alternative. It seems like a no-brainer, but I was not sure I could answer the question without taking a step back from the query.
Most people these days may know what organic food is. However, you may be surprised to know that not all foods are created equal, and the term organic might be more of an economic definition than a true statement about the food. So here is the Economics 101 for the food. When a company, or even a local farmer, says that his or her food is organic, it generally means that it has not been overly manipulated by humans. In other words, if it did not come from the earth or the rear end of an animal, it is not organic. The economics behind that statement are more complicated, however. If you sell organic food you can sometimes get away with charging 30-60% more than the alternative. This does not necessarily mean that it’s justifiable. It just means that you charge what you think the market will bare.
From a strictly nutritional standpoint (and people on both sides of the aisle may disagree), it just seems that if nature (and I don’t mean “Nature Valley”) has created it without our interruption, then there is a good chance that it is better for you. In fact I would argue that there is just more flavor in an organic apple than in the alternative. I even tasted mangos in a blind test, and I could not distinguish them from a peach. This is not good since I have traveled to countries where mangos grow on trees in people’s back yards and you can literally smell the mangos long before you can actually see them. The same goes for peaches. Natural food just has a bit more than the alternative: higher nutrient density, better color, and more flavor (meaning less need to add salt or other spices to enhance the flavor). It comes naturally.
The conflict is this: Where do you find more value when comparing the health value versus the dollar-cost? To put this in perspective, my sister-in-law went to Whole Foods Market ( www.wholefoodsmarket.com) for a grocery run. It cost her $600 for a 100% organic shopping cart. It cost another person $125 for the comparable non-organic shopping cart.
One might be tempted to say that good health has no price. This would be a valid point, but the non-economic costs have to be kept in mind. In order to pay for a $600 food bill in urban America, you will have to work harder to make more money, stay away from your family, get really stressed, and maybe even fall over dead from the increased demands. There is a very real chance that it may not be worth it. The reality is that just because a food is organic does not necessarily make it better.
I would say that there is a compromise and even an alternative. Grow your own food, get some organic and some conventional. It’s less expensive, you will work you rear end off, get in shape, and keep your garden in good form. There is also a good chance that you can determine for yourself (without too much outside influence) what organic food means to you and how healthy you believe it is when considering all the factors.
