How To Avoid Being Fired, Sacked Or Made Redundant

By Nike Roach

Low Stress = Better Employee

Not long ago, loyalty – both employees to company and vice versa – was common in the workplace. Once hired, the employee expected to stay with that company until retirement. Following is a list of tips (with explanations) which will help you improve your chances of keeping your job and maintaining your standard of living.

Act Like a Boss

Regardless of your title – from janitor to CEO – the first people to lose jobs are the ones the company feels it can do without. If you are not in sales look for innovative ways to improve the product or service. If you can save the company money, you will be considered valuable.

It’s The Customer Stupid

No matter how you slice it, it will always be the customer that controls a company. If customers are dissatisfied with you, consider yourself a top candidate to lose your job. If the income from your job qualifies you for a $200,000 home, buy as if you can only afford $100,000. If you ever loose your job, you’ll be able to cover expenses more easily without such a drastic reduction in your standard of living.

Find The Best People

Referring good people to work for your company is not as popular as it once was, but if you do so you will receive partial credit and be lauded for increasing the company’s assets.

Continually Learn New Approaches (stay in school)

So obvious that it’s often overlooked, continuing your education protects your job. Earning that degree, certificate, or diploma will raise your standing and increase your job security.

¿Habla Español?

If you can master other languages, especially if your company has foreign interests, you will be all the more valuable to the company.

Cross-train and Learn the Jobs of Other Departments

If your job is doomed, having skills in other areas will help you stay with the company through a lateral transfer. A company’s departments are interconnected, so you should be too.

Stay Healthy

Eat right, avoid unhealthy practices, get a massage and exercise get. If you cost the company too much money, they will find a way to fire you … legal or otherwise.

Take Mini-Vacations

Taking time off work might seem like a way to lose  your job, but  mini-vacations are a great way to keep your sanity (thereby performing better on the job) and avoid being out of the loop too long.

Work for Yourself

Working for YOU can be very fulfilling and profitable. This country was founded on the principle of self-reliance and self-employment. If you seek job security, many people claim that the easiest and safest work is in starting a home business. One aspect of successful self-employment that is often overlook is results oriented training. Find a good teacher and go for the gold

Many of our big companies are going under or outsourcing to other countries to stay viable. If you want to remain viable as well, pay attention to the signals and always remember that your job is not permanent.
