This is a great time of year to start a new attitude and way of life. This is not a resolution because unless you are in politics, resolutions mean little. A new attitude is creating a new fashion of thinking and behaving.

Our very own Nike Roach was a guest on Mountain Radio WLOE talking about health, debt and why its so important to challenge these habits before they do you in. The two hosts speak for most of the first 10 minutes and Nike start to share wisdom that any committed person can do. These skills he learned from being a student of Dani Johnson.

Low Stress = Better Employee

Not long ago, loyalty – both employees to company and vice versa – was common in the workplace. Once hired, the employee expected to stay with that company until retirement. Following is a list of tips (with explanations) which will help you improve your chances of keeping your job and maintaining your standard of living.

Act Like a Boss

Regardless of your title – from janitor to CEO – the first people to lose jobs are the ones the company feels it can do without. If you are not in sales look for innovative ways to improve the product or service. If you can save the company money, you will be considered valuable.

It’s The Customer Stupid

No matter how you slice it, it will always be the customer that controls a company. If customers are dissatisfied with you, consider yourself a top candidate to lose your job. If the income from your job qualifies you for a $200,000 home, buy as if you can only afford $100,000. If you ever loose your job, you’ll be able to cover expenses more easily without such a drastic reduction in your standard of living.

Find The Best People

Referring good people to work for your company is not as popular as it once was, but if you do so you will receive partial credit and be lauded for increasing the company’s assets.

Continually Learn New Approaches (stay in school)

So obvious that it’s often overlooked, continuing your education protects your job. Earning that degree, certificate, or diploma will raise your standing and increase your job security.

¿Habla Español?

If you can master other languages, especially if your company has foreign interests, you will be all the more valuable to the company.

Cross-train and Learn the Jobs of Other Departments

If your job is doomed, having skills in other areas will help you stay with the company through a lateral transfer. A company’s departments are interconnected, so you should be too.

Stay Healthy

Eat right, avoid unhealthy practices, get a massage and exercise get. If you cost the company too much money, they will find a way to fire you … legal or otherwise.

Take Mini-Vacations

Taking time off work might seem like a way to lose  your job, but  mini-vacations are a great way to keep your sanity (thereby performing better on the job) and avoid being out of the loop too long.

Work for Yourself

Working for YOU can be very fulfilling and profitable. This country was founded on the principle of self-reliance and self-employment. If you seek job security, many people claim that the easiest and safest work is in starting a home business. One aspect of successful self-employment that is often overlook is results oriented training. Find a good teacher and go for the gold

Many of our big companies are going under or outsourcing to other countries to stay viable. If you want to remain viable as well, pay attention to the signals and always remember that your job is not permanent.

A gift can do more to help

A gift is more than you think

Rarely a month passes that our company doesn’t receive a request for our time or money. I’m a strong proponent of giving, and we most frequently provide massages and other wellness services at our center or in home or business settings. Giving has been a high-priority activity for the ten years we’ve been in business.

Over the years I have become very well acquainted with donation requests, and they generally fall into two categories: they are either clearly stated and well organized or they are vague and somehow fail to link the benefits of giving to the request being made.

For your requests to succeed, you need to make sure that they are articulate and demonstrate the benefits to the giving organization. Explain the purpose of the request, how the donation will be used to achieve a goal, and how the person or business will benefit by giving. Covering these three requirements will bring more success in your solicitations.

Over time, you will find yourself approaching the same people multiple times. This task can be challenging because, no matter how noble your cause, you cannot expect the same business to support more than its fair share of your needs. Therefore, it is necessary to be creative when asking people to part with their time and/or money.

The first fact you must present is that your organization has credibility. Belief in an organization is most often the first consideration people make in deciding whether to donate. Even the Red Cross, notably credible, lost a lot of credibility when people learned that it was holding back 9-11 funds in order to use them for future projects. Be honest.

A second need is to address what benefits the donor will gain. Though it sounds contradictory to the idea of charity, showing people how they will be better off for giving will help convince them to donate. There is a reason, after all, that the government provides tax breaks for donations to reputable institutions. People receive emotional benefits for giving to something they know is honest and good and monetary benefits for their own financial situation. My mother has always taught me that giving unselfishly brings returns of even greater value, and she is right. I have a lovely family and life, and I continue to give.

A third idea, a subcategory of the previous one, is that charity sells. Most of the biggest companies give millions of dollars every year. You know that benevolence is not driven purely by a need to feel good about themselves – it is because the attention that comes with charity brings favorable views on the company. McDonalds may have issues relating to the health of its customers, but they can point to the Ronald McDonald Houses to offset the negative publicity they sometimes receive.

To address charity on a more local level, away from multi-million dollar businesses, make your charitable requests interesting to the smaller businesses that may not immediately see the benefit of giving. You might offer them exclusive rights to showcase their name all over the event. Another idea is “gift pollination,” taking a small gift and helping it grow. For example, imagine you need $500 worth of graphic artwork done but don’t have the money. Ask a restaurant for a $200 gift certificate, but put something towards it yourself. If you offer them $75 for the $200 certificate, you will more likely be successful because they see you are making an effort and you are helping offset their costs (perhaps they break even this way and there is no money out of pocket for them). Then you can do the same thing with the graphic artist, i.e. offer them a $200 gift certificate in exchange for $500 worth of work. Again, you cover their costs, they only give time and let go of the profit, and you have pollinated successfully. For $75, two companies have received positive advertising and you have the $500 of graphic artwork you need!

It might seem that people should give for no reason, but with so many charities popping up these days, it behooves organizations to be a bit more aggressive in order to succeed with their donation requests.

Charitable donations make the world more productive, but to be successful we all need to use our minds’ creative powers. Imagine yourself on the receiving end of requests before you make requests so that you can better understand where the other person is coming from, and there is no limit to what you can receive for just a little time, creativity, and commitment to your projects.

With the price of gas hindering family vacations, many people will miss the therapeutic joys of an escape from their daily stresses. However, before you cancel your chance to create wonderful memories, consider these eight options that will help you stay in the vacation state of mind.

1. Travel when others stay home

Generally ticket prices are based on when you travel. If you leave on a Friday and return on a Sunday, like most people, then expect to pay higher prices. Save money – sometimes a considerable amount – by leaving on a Thursday or Saturday and returning on any day but Sunday.

2. Haggle, haggle, haggle

In most parts of the world, haggling or heavy negotiation is expected. When it comes to hotels, car rentals, or even resorts, asking for discounts may save you as much as 30%. You have nothing to lose by asking, and you might even have some fun in the process. Don’t get upset if the answer is no; try another company and you will eventually find a deal.

3. Stay local

Many people in this area simply love the mountains, rivers, and other nearby tourist attractions. Oddly, when it comes to vacationing, those same people often take for granted the beauty and fun we have nearby. Don’t overlook local options. Start at the Winston-Salem Visitor Center and you will find a plethora of fun vacation ideas within an hour’s drive, from Old Salem down the street to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro.

4. Always reserve compact or economy cars

When renting a car, I always reserve a compact. It’s cheaper to rent, even though I rarely actually get a compact car. Because compacts are the most desired, rental companies frequently run out of them. In order to make a buck, they will upgrade you for free, meaning that you can be cruising in luxury for the price of an economy ride. Try to pick your car up late in the day – there’s a better chance that the compacts will be gone by then.

5. Join a travel club

Pre-internet age, people joined travel clubs for the savings and preferential treatment they offered. The internet’s reach has caused many people to overlook travel clubs, which is unfortunate since they still provide some of the cheapest options for business and leisure trips. The clubs’ large numbers mean that they can negotiate good deals for the members, easily making up for your modest membership fee and allowing the club to continue advocating for increased savings.

6. Befriend a travel agent

Travel agents have access to some of the greatest travel savings on the planet. They may not be able to help with flight costs, but they do have the inside scoop on hotel, resort, and vacation hot-spot deals. Agents can also advise you of the best time to travel and how to avoid the crowds, further reducing the cost.

7. Become a travel agent

Travel agents are privy to great travel deals and information, and nothing can compare to familiarization trips, known as “Fam” trips. New hotels and resorts want favorable recommendations from agents, so they offer fam trips to agents at greatly reduced rates. You do not have to work for the public if you are a travel agent; become one for your own savings. Check out the process online.

8. Cruises: the all in one vacation

Until you go on a cruise, you will have no idea how much it offers. Good lodging combined with award-winning food prepared by award winning chefs from around the world makes a great vacation, even before considering the top-notch entertainment provided. Broadway-caliber shows, movie theaters, rock climbing, pools, putting golf, video games, children’s areas, and shopping. You get the idea. And the scenery at the ports-of-call is simply astounding.

The tips above are just the beginning to making vacations possible, even in tough economic times. For more information on great vacation savings, see www.myeniola.net
